Destination University

If you aren't a member of our new social networking -- online learning area, the Destination University Student Center, you are missing out big-time!

This month in the DU Student Center, you could be watching a live webinar on "How to Create Store Windows that Draw Customers in Your Doors", a webinar on "Social Networking Beyond Facebook", and you could participating in our Open Forum where I answer your specific business questions.  That doesn't include the nearly 50 other available and future webinars that are in DU.

If you are interested in improving your business, your staff's performance, or your organization's value to your membership, go to DestinationUniversity.com.  One warning though: DU is designed for business
people.
You are going to be learning from a select group of authors and experts who I've personally chosen because I know that they will provide solid business advice that works!  If you are looking for self-growth, self-help videos, our network isn't the one for you.  Plus, to join DU, you must be willing to invest $1.00 a day to improve your business (your investment to join DU is $29.95 a month).  We think DU is a great way to grow your business and sales, and one of the best return-on-investments around, but you have to decide that yourself.

Quote of the Month

"If I wanted to become a tramp, I would seek information and advice from the most successful tramp I could find. If I wanted to become a failure I would seek advice from men who have never succeeded.  If I wanted to succeed in all things, I would look around me for those who are succeeding, and do as they have done."

This month, I have several tips and some ideas that can help you this Summer, on into the Fall.

Tips $$$ of the Month

I have multiple tips this month. Pick and choose the ones that can help you.

Tip #1:  Turn on any television or pick up any newspaper, and the talk of a second recession is being discussed.  While I don't have a crystal ball, I think you can expect that the 4th quarter of 2010 and the 1st Quarter of 2011 are going to be especially challenging.  Click here to read what I think owners should be doing this summer, and why the next seven months are going to be critical for small business owners.

Tip #2:  In today's uncertain economy, here's a book I'd recommend for anyone whose life has more turmoil in it than they'd like:  Click here to see more!

Tip #3:  I am now blogging several times weekly at my new blog: www.DestinationUBlog.com.  Be sure to go there later this month as I explain why December retail sales will be stronger than most analysts expect, why all of us learn like a piece of Swiss cheese, and why economic stress is causing business owners to do exactly the opposite of what they should be doing.  My blog will also be the place where I'll be announcing any free workshops or webinars I will be conducting.  So, stop by often!

Our September Destination BootCamp

Our last 2010 Destination BootCamp happens on September 21-23.  If you are thinking of attending, get your registration in.  Our class is over half-filled and we have almost two months to go!

We have owners flying in from Canada, Australia, and groups of owners coming from several cities as part of our Community Reinvention Program.  Remember that when you attend the BootCamp, you will be learning information that has taken me over 24 years to learn.  I didn't just make up this stuff!  Every detail you learn at the BootCamp has come from real businesses that are creating real successes in sometimes horrible locations and challenging demographic areas.

Plus, we are flying in our advertising guru from New York City to work with each attendee, all included in your investment to attend.

As I said earlier, I don't think most owners are thinking about what's coming in the next seven months, but the groundwork you lay now by attending our BootCamp can help you overcome anything that this economy is going to throw at you.

What do you learn in your 2 ½ days with me? Click here to read the list of 75 different topics that you will learn during the BootCamp (if you know all of these 75 points, you don't need to attend).
Upcoming Workshops on the Road
I will be speaking in the following cities in the coming weeks and months.  All of these sessions are open to the public.  Here are the cities, and if you'd like more information, just click on the link at the bottom of this section.
  • Toronto, Ontario, Canada
  • Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
  • Northern Indiana (Middlebury)
  • Phillipsburg, Kansas
  • Chanute, Kansas
  • Albany, Oregon (Oregon Main Street)

Congrats to Croghan Colonial Bank, Again!

Congratulations to the Croghan Colonial Bank who are again sponsoring a group of seven business owners and the Norwalk Ohio Main Street Manager who are attending our Destination Business BootCamp in September.  The Croghan Colonial Bank is using $12,000 of its own marketing budget to help fund this economic activity of their community.  Rather than just saying they are helping their local businesses (like most banks spout in their ads), Croghan Colonial Bank actually puts their money where their mouth is!

Why can't Croghan Colonial Bank open a branch out here in Longmont, Colorado?  I'd put my money in it!

If you are not familiar with our Community Reinvention Program, it works like this:  Send at least 6 different owners (who have traffic-generating businesses) plus a Community Coordinator to our Destination BootCamp, and the sponsoring community will receive over $16,000 of free consulting services, the owners get to participate in a 6-month consulting program after the BootCamp, and I will come and speak in that community and waive my speaking fee.  You can read more about it here.

We only have room for one more community in our September BootCamp.  Will your city or town be the one?

Still baffled why Croghan would do this?  Read this article and learn how this investment in their local community is not only helping the businesses there, but it is also yielding big results for the Croghan Colonial Bank itself (including an immediate 17% increase in downtown business deposits!)  I think this is what's called a Win-Win scenario.
Many businesses are in a state of paralysis these days. They are afraid to act, afraid to change, and afraid to deviate from what they have done in the past.  Folks, this economy doesn't require massive actions; it requires focused actions on doing what works, in a certain order, and all designed around convincing a customer that your business is THE place for them.  Our Destination BootCamp, our webinars and workshops, and our new Destination University Student Center can help, but we cannot make you learn this information.  But for those of you who are ready to change, we're here to help.
